Smart Meter Trainee

As the UK-wide smart meter installation programme intensifies, you will no doubt be very conscious of the fierce competition for skilled smart meter trainees. Not only do the nation’s energy companies and meter operators have to recruit meter installers, they also have to ensure that every smart meter trainee they take on board has the full range of technical, academic and personal skills needed to represent the company or their clients to their customers.

How to Source a High Calibre Smart Meter Trainee?

At ECTA training, we effectively screen potential candidates on your behalf, checking they have the prerequisites and attitude to complete our comprehensive Dual Fuel or single fuel (gas or power) diplomas. We actively target specific sectors of the market (e.g. former Armed Forces personnel, those looking to up skill, etc.) to ensure every smart meter trainee we sign up is a good fit for the role of installation engineer. This includes having adequate verbal and written language skills, as evidenced by good GCSE grades, a clean driving licence and, just as importantly, the enthusiasm for and understanding of the whole smart energy ethos.

ECTA Training understand that Ofgem requirements are keenly focusing on customer-facing skills such as effective communication and have tailored our diploma packages to ensure that those skills are developed to just as high a standard as technical abilities. Understanding safety and compliance responsibilities also form an important part of our students’ training.

One of the key challenges for employers is sourcing committed individuals who have the drive and determination to overcome challenges and stay the course. ECTA trainees have gone one step further than job centre or website applicants by investing their money (or training grant) into one of our diplomas.

Is Your Current Recruitment Strategy Working?

We understand that in order to run a cost-efficient operation, every smart meter trainee you take on must be committed to the role itself and not just attracted by the salary and perks. The costs of running a successful recruitment campaign are significant and you can’t afford to make mistakes. If you are attracting the wrong type of employee or your in-house training facilities are not paying for themselves, working alongside ECTA training could be the solution you need, ensuring you get it right first time.

An Affordable, High Quality Training Programme

With millions of smart meters ready to be installed in the nation’s homes by 2020, the race is on for meter operators and energy companies to come up with the perfect recruitment strategy. Rather than drawing potential employees in with lucrative post-training salary packages alone, working with ECTA Training will enable you to take on trainees who are focused on building a new career or up skilling. We do ask our meter operator partners to pay our trainees a minimum wage since many of them have families to support but the main purpose of their placement will be to help them to build up their field skills and pass their installation assessments. The rest of the classroom and workshop based education will be carried out by us. Our customised Stockport training centre offers every smart meter trainee a secure, supportive base from which to develop their suite of practical and customer-facing skills. Once our Dual Fuel diploma trainees have passed their examinations (which include ACS CMA1 and MET1 qualifications), they will be ready to hit the ground running and be true ambassadors for your company.
